Affiliate software is basically a system at allows you to automatically relate a sale back to the person who originally referred that customer to you. There are a huge range of additional functions that most affiliate software also carries out, but they are all based around this simple concept.
Affiliate programs have many names. Affiliate, partner program, reseller (related but not the same), commissions.
Online affiliate software typically does at least the following things:
- Tracks visitors to the web site along with a code identifying the affiliate that referred them
- Allows affiliates access to resources to help them promote your products
- Records sales, commissions, payments and refunds for each affiliate
- Lets the affiliate review the visitor information for the traffic they have referred
It may also:
- Track affiliates referred by other affiliates to pay 'second tier' commissions
- Automatically make payments to affiiliates via PayPal
- Notify affiliates when they make sales
